Priorities of the Education Committee:
- Seek to eliminate segregation and other discriminatory practices in public education
- Study local educational conditions affecting minority groups
- Investigate the public school system and school zoning
- Become familiar with textbooks to identify racially derogatory material
- Seek to stimulate school attendance
- Keep informed of school conditions and strive to correct abuses where found
- Investigate the effects of standardized and high stakes testing practices
- Teacher certification
- Promote parental involvement in education
- Aim to be a center of popular education on the race question and on the work of the Association
Get involved! The Education Committee is actively engaged in many community efforts and we need your help:
- Mentoring students
- Serving on School Advisory Committees (SACs)
- Participating in school board meetings
- Helping with service projects
Juvenile Justice:
The Education Committee focuses on Juvenile Justice by
- Monitoring school suspension data for disproportionalities based on race and other factors
- Working with school district officials to implement changes and improvements to ensure equity in school discipline
- Mentoring students with high risk factors
- Mentoring juvenile inmates at the county jail
