TALLAHASSEE, FL – Today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he would be suspending State Attorney Monique Worrell, the state attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court for the State of Florida, which represents Orange and Osceola counties. NAACP Florida State Conference President, Adora Nweze released the following statement, condemning the Governor’s actions and the administration’s failure to accurately represent the broader Florida community:
“With each political stunt he performs, Ron DeSantis makes it more clear that he is determined to undermine Black power and progress. The NAACP Florida State Conference stands in solidarity with State Attorney Monique Worrell, who has displayed an unwavering commitment to promoting equity, justice, and public safety within her district. We must continue to stand up and speak out against the fascist policies of an administration who have failed their duties to serve all Floridians while bowing the knee to an extremist few.”
In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, State Attorney Worrell defended herself and called out the politically motivated nature of DeSantis’ actions, explaining how DeSantis is pushing a “false narrative” that portrays her is an ineffective prosecutor who puts residents in danger, but crime data reportedly indicates, “the people are more protected than ever under [her] leadership for the last three years.”
